THE NERVES - when you find out

THE NERVES - when you find out

The Nerves were a mid-'70s power pop trio based in Los Angeles, California, featuring guitarist Jack Lee, bassist Peter Case, and drummer Paul Collins. All three members composed songs and sang. They managed an international tour in the U.S. and Canada, including dates with The Ramones, and performances for the troops as part of the United Services Organization. The Nerves lasted just a short time and self-released only one self-titled four-song EP in 1976, featuring the songs "Hanging on the Telephone" (Lee), "When You Find Out" (Case), "Give Me Some Time" (Lee), and "Working Too Hard" (Collins). The Nerves were managed by drummer Paul Collins, who also did most of the band's bookings and promotion. The Nerves' EP was distributed by independent Bomp! Records and officially re-released to CD and vinyl by Alive Records in 2008, followed by a second release of The Breakaways, an album of post-Nerves recordings made by Paul Collins and Peter Case prior to the formation of Collins' group The Beat.

AMERICAN SUITCASE - pillowcloud

AMERICAN SUITCASE - pillowcloud

"Pilowsky" es el nuevo disco de los nórdicos AMERICAN SUITCASE tras varios años de silencio. Y la verdad es que la espera ha merecido la pena. 14 grandes canciones que destilan influencias y sonidos de sus bandas favoritas: the byrds, teenage fanclub y similares. Además hay concesiones al pop mas sencillo, al indiepop y "pillowcloud" es una buena muestra de ello.

Uno de los mejores discos del año, sin duda.

RENO BO - you don´t know

RENO BO - you don´t know

The sideman gone solo power popper has become a bit of a cliche on this site (a good cliche, mind you), and the latest entrant into the field is Reno Bo. He's been a guitarist in both The Mooney Suzuki and Albert Hammond Jr's backing band, and now he's unleashed a gem of a disc that successfully melds classic rock and power pop.

The proceedings begin with "There's a Light", a classic anthemic number that finds the midpoint between Oasis and The Black Crowes, complete with majestic guitar solos building to a crescendo. "Higher Tonight" is straight-up power pop in the vein of Cheap Trick or a better Tinted Windows, the moody "Off Your Back" has a Tom Petty-in-pop-mode feel, and I can almost see the lighters being waved in the crowd during the big buildup of "Shine".

Elsewhere, Bo knows folky ballads as well - "Baby, You're Not Feelin' Me Tonight" provides a nice change of pace, while "Sugar Suite Blues" isn't exactly the blues but instead the hardest-rocking track on the disc. "How Does It Feel" rocks with swagger, and the breezily melodic "Here Right Now" is almost jangly. "I See Stars" closes out things in fine fashion, a midtempo pop nugget that once again features fine guitar work from Mr. Bo. If you like your power pop with more of a rock edge to it, you should know Bo.

WONDERWHEEL - five minutes away

WONDERWHEEL - five minutes away

WONDERWHEEL is a collaboration between Norwegian singer/songwriters ULF RISNES and ØYVIND HOLM, the latter a mainstay of the DIPSOMANIACS and DELETED WAVEFORM GATHERINGS. Safe and Sorry is richly crafted pop rock, based around strummed acoustic guitars and close duo harmonies fleshed out with tasteful rhythm accompaniment. The pair sings together as if born to, taking an obvious joy in the interplay of their sweet ‘n’ sour chemistry. Supporting songs as finely tuneful as “Satellite,” “What a Joy” and “The Day I Fell to Earth,” Holm and Risnes harmonize like the HOLLIES distilled to two people, with irresistible results. Falling somewhere between the REMBRANDTS and the PETER HOLSAPPLE & CHRIS STAMEY records, Wonderwheel makes effortlessly enjoyable pop.

THE SIMPLE CARNIVAL - caitlin´s on the beach

THE SIMPLE CARNIVAL - caitlin´s on the beach

The Simple Carnival is an orchestral pop recording project created by a guy named Jeff Boller.

What does The Simple Carnival sound like?

Well, if the Beach Boys and Harry Nilsson collaborated on Sesame Street... Or if Burt Bacharach wrote songs for Electric Light Orchestra... Or if Billy Joel partied with Esquivel... Or... heck, just go to the Music page and listen for yourself!.

THE WANDAS - bending over backwards

THE WANDAS - bending over backwards

"The four-piece group The Wandas separate themselves from the large pack of Boston pop bands with a tightly designed, smart sound. Besides the production from Patrick Krief (of The Dears) and the mastering of Ryan Morey (The Stills, Arcade Fire), the vocals from Keith McEachern and friends are a delight.

"Check out the matching harmonies of "Bending Over Backwards" or the falsetto on "Trepidation" for the ingredient that truly adds to the already focused formula. Expect this Berklee-bred band to do what many others have done: blow up." [David Day - The Weekly Dig]
