LUKAS SHERFEY - soul vacation

Lukas Sherfey, el líder de los desaparecidos The Movement, tiene nuevo disco en la calle, editado por su propia compañía discográfica. Soul Vacation se llama el album y, como su propio nombre indica, esta vez está más orientado hacia el soul, incluyendo también medios tiempos y sonidos acústicos. Y lo cierto es que este trabajo de un mod convencido como es Sherfey no defrauda, tiene canciones de una calidad notable en las que, en algunos momentos, podemos reconocer puntos en común con el Weller de Style Council o hasta con el gran Elvis Costello.

Sensaciones impregnadas de un ligero tono nuevaolero con cierto regusto mod, que me retrotraen a aquellos añejos años 80, donde los fantásticos Truth y los primeros Style Council de nuestro admirado Weller ya hacían discos como éstos, repletos de adictivas melodías pop, e irresistibles estribillos, modelados bajo los parámetros del efectivo y pegajoso sonido Motown. TINTED WINDOWS - can´t get a read on you

"kind of a girl" fue su vibrante primer single y acaban de publicar su disco de debut donde destaca sobremanera esta canción absolutamente portentosa con un riff de guitarra contagioso y una melodía arrolladora. Puro powerpop al mejor estilo de finales de los 70. Sólo por estas dos canciones ya merece la pena el disco.

COOPER - hyde park

"aeropuerto"es el nuevo disco de COOPER y esta canción lo abre. Todo un homenaje a uno de los sitios mas entrañables de Londres, sin duda. Buenos recuerdos le vienen a uno al ver el videoclip.

BOB EVANS - someone so much

"Goodnight, bull creek!" es el tercer y nuevo disco del australiano BOB EVANS. Un disco lleno de preciosas melodías y bonitos arreglos. En mi opinión, el mejor disco del año hasta la fecha.

"someone so much" es el single que presenta este disco y es una buena muestra de la belleza que imprime a sus canciones Bob Evans.

THE BOYS - baby it´s you

No se trata de ninguna novedad discográfica, sino de rescatar este auténtico hit de una banda americana absolutamente desconocida (no confundir con la banda inglesa también llamada "the boys").  Solo hicieron tres singles a finales de los 70, canciones con toques de nueva ola, glam y powerpop.

"baby it´s you" tiene melodía, estribillo y emoción desde la primera vez que la oyes. Algunos la consideran como una de las 10 mejores canciones de la nueva ola y powerpop de finales de los 70 y comienzos de los 80.

La verdad es que llevo varios días escuchándola a todas horas. Absolutamente recomendada por el POPCHEF.

THE RUBINOOS - everybody´s got something but me

Wild Punk Records ha editado en España “HodgePodge”, una colección de 16 canciones de The Rubinoos que, hasta ahora, sólo habían sido lanzadas en exclusiva para Japón.

Entre ellas se incluye este midtempo pop delicioso llamado "everybody´s got something but me", que, al parecer, fue descartada de la edición de su disco de mitad de los 90, "Paleophonic". Pues menudo descarte. Todo un hit de  esta mítica banda californiana.

TINTED WINDOWS - kind of a girl

Tinted Windows es un "supergrupo" formado por James Iha (ex Smashing Pumpkins), Bun E. Carlos (batería de Cheap Trick), Taylor Hanson (que fue cantante principal de Hanson) y Adam Schlesinger (bajista de Fountains of Wayne e Ivy).

Su primer single, "kind of a girl", todo un pelotazo.

THE TOMORROWS - pity her

 

Banda canadiense que surgió tras la disolución de THE ROSWELLS. Debutan con un disco llamado "Jupiter Optimus Maximus" que es todo un homenaje al sonido Beatle-Badfinger-Raspberries.

The new release "Jupiter Optimus Maximus" from Canada's The Tomorrows (ex-Roswells) lives up to the majesty of that name and then some. There is nothing small about this record...enormous hooks, big melodies, and a huge wall of sound.

The Tomorrows (Marc Stewart, Scott Fletcher, Tony Kerr and Adrian Buckley) could perhaps be more aptly referred to as "The Yesterdays", being a living tribute to their musical influences. They faithfully recapture all of the elements we love in the founders of the power pop genre, from The Beatles to Badfinger to The Raspberries. Here you can hear fresh Beatlesque choruses throughout, and even an extended coda on "Remember" reminiscent of what the Beatles did with "Hey Jude". For those of you digging The Goldbergs, you'll also dig The Tomorrows.

This modern day fab four have a great chemistry and a knack for designing harmonies that seem to melt right into your ears. It is difficult to pick favorites from such a strong batch of tunes, but standout tracks for me include the catchy radio-friendly opener, "Effortless lee", the harmony-laden and soaring title track, the breezy acoustic-based "Such A Shame", and the rocker with attitude, "Goodbye".

BEN KWELLER - on her own

"changing horses" es el último y algo aburrido (en mi opinión, claro está) disco de BEN KWELLER.

Pero un disco de BEN KWELLER siempre suele incluir alguna canción de esas que te maravillan cuando la escuchas por primera vez.

Y "on her own" es un buen ejemplo de ello. Deliciosa

CHERRYSTONE - I´m in love

Cuarteto británico con un mini cd de 7 canciones publicado a finales del año pasado con claras influencias beatlenianas. Canciones pop de menos de 3 minutos con melodía pegadiza y simple letra. 

Se acerca San Valentín así que esta canción puede servir a mas de uno/a.

Perfect pop song. Hit a primera escucha.

THE CATALYSTS - autumn goes everywhere

Otra buena banda de Glasgow ( y ya van unas cuantas). Y con esto uno ya puede hacerse una idea de su sonido (la sombra de TFC es alargada...). Su lider es Ulric Kennedy que estuvo en la banda de sarah records, Golden Down. Tienen dos eps. Aquí está su referencia en myspace:

THE BRASS BUTTONS - rescue me // i can´t sleep

Grupo de Cadiz que ha estado teloneando a The Primary Five en sus conciertos por España. Acaban de debutar con un disco de claras raices americanas. Sonido muy agradable y con algunas maravillosas composiciones como estas dos que recomienda el POPCHEF.

Tras la ruptura de Driver 8 , tres de sus ex-miembros, Juanlu Gonzalez (Bajo), Victor Navarro (Guitarra, mandolina y coros) y Nacho Gomez (teclados) deciden emprender un nuevo proyecto junto a Maria Palacios (voz), Maria del Mar Armario (voz), Antonio Serrano (batería, voces), David Gomez-Calcerrada (guitarra, voces) y David Ponce (guitarra).

Tras dos años de ensayos y preparación de un nuevo CD, dos de sus componentes salen de la banda aunque Maria del Mar Armario interpreta varios de los temas. También participan Pedro Perles de Lêda Très, Nacho Fernández de Intocables y el propio Paco Loco. «Wet beind the ears» (©2008), es grabado y producido por Paco Loco y masterizado por Mario G. Alberni. El CD se publica en ROCK INDIANA en Diciembre de 2008.

Jim Boggia was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. At birth, he was declared legally blind in his left eye. He began playing the guitar at age five, encouraged by his musician father.^[1] He eventually moved to Philadelphia in order to work as a customer service representative in a high-tech studio equipment company.^[2]

Boggia later quit his job and began his musical career by doing session work, jingles, and writing songs for other musical artists. He played or toured with various artists including Juliana Hatfield, Jill Sobule, Amanda Marshall, and Bernadette Peters. In 1998 he formed a band with Mike Frank, Kevin Hanson, Erik Johnson, and Steve Beskrone.^[3] He was also a member of the band 4 Way Street along with Ben Arnold, Scott Bricklin and Joseph Parsons.^[4] In 2001, Boggia released his first full-length solo studio album Fidelity is the Enemy. The track "Several Thousand" was featured on the ABC show Men in Trees.

In 2005, Boggia released a follow-up album, Safe In Sound. The song "Live the Proof" appeared in a BlackBerry commercial.^[5] He released a third album on August 5, 2008 entitled Misadventures in Stereo.^[5] The album features collaborations with lyricist Tony Asher, NRBQ guitarist Big Al Anderson, and singer songwriter David Poe. He also released a mono mix of the album on August 19, 2008 that was issued in the vinyl format.^[6]

Jim Boggia has a variety of musical influences including Simon & Garfunkel, Harry Nilsson, Cat Stevens, and Brian Wilson. He also is a fan of the Beatles, having performed in various Beatles tribute concerts as well as a recreation of their famous rooftop concert.^[7]

BUBBLEGUM - new dyed hair

"where is Matthew Smith" es el tercer disco de los asturianos BUBBLEGUM y sin duda su mejor disco hasta la fecha. Todo un compendio de grandes canciones de powerpop con mayúsculas. El mejor disco del año 2008 de una banda española y uno de los mejores a nivel internacional.

CAESARS - stuck with you

"strawbery weed" es el último y doble disco de los suecos (otra vez suecos) CAESARS (antes también conocidos con el nombre de caesars´s Palace) que alcanzaron cierta "fama" con su canción "jerk it out" que servía de soporte musical a un anuncio de tv de un conocido reproductor de mp3.

Caesars se une a la larga lista de bandas nórdicas que se caracterizan por ser auténticos maestros en componer canciones de pop (de lo que denominamos "pop con guitarras"). "Stuck with you" es una excelente muestra de este tipo de canción. Toda una joya pop irresistible.
