ATTIC LIGHTS - ton of love

De nuevo vuelven a este blog los escoceses ATTIC LIGHTS, una de las bandas favoritas del momento del POPCHEF y autores de uno de los grandes discos del año, "friday night ligts"

Ya dimos su merecida referencia a su disco de debut pero entre las canciones "escondidas" en los varios eps publicados con anterioridad por ellos hemos encontrado este tema llamado "ton of love" que, sin duda, es una de las mejores canciones que uno ha escuchado este año. Lástima que no se haya incluido en su cd de debut. Cuesta creer que este tipo de canciones queden "pérdidas"  como "cara b"  de un single o ep.

Si tuviera que elegir 5 canciones del año sin duda "ton of love" de ATTIC LIGHTS estaría entre ellas.

"Ton of love" recuerda mucho a beach boys y teenage fanclub y el resultado de estas influencias hacen de esta canción una perfect pop song:

LUKAH BOO - where the melody is the most important thing

Bajo este curioso nombre (tomado a mitades de un personaje de una peli de Kusturica y de la banda de Martin Carr, Boo Radleys) se presenta Tony Saenz,  el cantante y compositor de los extintos THE HAPPY LOSERS.

Ayer nos deleitó y nos emocionó en Valencia con un concierto acompañado solo de su guitarra y en donde nos presentó sus nuevos temas, amén de recordar algunos de los happy losers y hacer alguna que otra versión.

Y lo que prima en LUKAH BOO es, sin duda, la exquisitez en la melodía pop. Esta canción es evidentemente una firme declaración de intenciones que yo suscribo al 100 %.  Lo que uno da prioridad al escuchar y catalogar una canción es, sin duda, la melodía.

Con impaciencia espero lo que será su disco de debut que seguro me hará disfrutar.

El tercer disco de los australianos THE WELLINGTONS es, sin duda, uno de mis favoritos del año. Melodías, fuerza, emoción, la verdad es que lo tiene todo a lo largo de sus 10 canciones. Y en directo son todo un disparo.

Esta canción es de mis preferidas y es imprescindible para animar cualquier party. A bailar...

GRAMERCY ARMS - fakin´ // shining bright

Otra de las grandes sorpresas de finales de año. Otro debut de una banda compuesta por gente de Guided by voices, Luna, Dambuilders y que en su disco cuenta con innumerables colaboraciones.

Son 10  notables canciones. Estas dos son una buena muestra de como son capaces de combinar melodías y estribillos contagiosos. Perfect pop songs.

ARMY NAVY - saints // unresponsive ears

Junto a ATTIC LIGHTS, este disco de debut de los americanos ARMY NAVY es mi disco favorito de las últimas semanas. La verdad es que el nombre de la banda no es nada acertado pero lo que se incluye dentro de él es muy apetecible. Uno de los mejores discos del año si te gusta el pop de guitarras con buenos estribillos y melodías contagiosas

Esto se dice de ellos en su myspace y yo lo sucribo al 100 %:

"...Un puñado de canciones que lo dejan con ganas de escuchar más...uno de los lanzamientos más frescos que dio el mercado indie...La banda parece empecinada en encontrar la canción pop perfecta, aplicando la fórmula de sumar melodías alegres a letras melancólicas. ATTIC LIGHTS - the dirty thirst

El esperado album de los ecoceses ATTIC LIGHTS ya está a la venta. Producidos por Francis McDonald y con colaboraciones de la gente de CAMERA OBSCURA, de quienes son buenos amigos. Después de editar varios singles durante un par de años presentean ahora "friday night lights" su album de debut que se ha convertido en mi disco de cabecera de los últimos días. 10 espléndidas canciones que nos recuerdan, como no , a Teenage Fanclub, Beach Boys, etc.

THE OFFBEAT - say the word

Disco de debut de estos británicos cuyo sonido evidencia claras influencias del pop de los sesenta, el merseybeat, etc. Seguro que adoran a los beatles, los kinks, hollies, etc.

Están producidos por Nigel Clark, que imagino que es el lider de los fabulosos Dodgy.

The vintage guitars on the cover tell it all: The Offbeat is all about 60s British pop, jangle pop, and all points in between. The is without a doubt the best album of its kind since The Red Button and Smith & Hayes from last year, and needless to say, fans of those discs will want to snap this one up. The Offbeat are actually English, so in that respect they have one up on the Yanks who served the style so well on those other discs. In fact, there truly isn't a bad track on this album, and if the calendar read 1965 instead of 2008, these guys would be regulars on Top of the Pops and American Bandstand. I'd say we have a real top 10 of 2008 contender on our hands here.

SAM BEETON - what you look for

Jovencísimo (20 años) británico que ha debutado con su primer disco del que se extrae esta joya pop, un hit irresistible que nos recuerda muchísimo a las melodías de Phil Seymour. Además con cierto éxito en listas de ventas en UK.

Se pega a tu cerebro a primera escucha. Toda una perfect pop song.

Sam was inspired to pick up a guitar by his dad, who played in local punk group the Drains but who also loved The Beatles. The youngster sang in a pop-punk band at school and even toyed with the nu-metal of Limp Bizkit before landing a residency as an acoustic performer in a local pub, The Old Volunteer. He began singing Nina Simone covers, but soon moved on to his own songs.

THE SILVER SEAS - the country life

The Silver Seas (formerly The Bees U.S.) are a rock and alternative band from Nashville, Tennessee, which formed when producer Jason Lehning met singer-songwriter Daniel Tashian. The band toured as an opening act for Guster in 2004 after the independent release of their debut album, Starry Gazey Pie. Their second album, High Society, was released in early 2006

Banda sueca haciendo buen pop, para variar.

En esta canción recuerdan bastante a los americanos The Smithereens.

Menos de 2 minutos de estribillos pop perfectamente acoplados.

BRIAN WILSON - "good kind of love"

"That lucky old sun" es el último cd de Mr. Brian Wilson. A estas alturas sobra cualquier comentario acerca de él.

En su disco destaca esta maravilla canción pop con unos preciosos arreglos de violines al final de la misma.

Es todo un hit para hacernos mas amena la vuelta a la rutina.

THE PRIVATE JETS - "extraordinary sensations" / "investigate"

Mi disco favorito de este verano, con el que mas he disfrutado, saltado y emocionado.

Conoci a esta banda sueca hace ya seis años cuando editaron un ep lleno de melodías pop como sólo los nórdicos saben hacer. Cuando parecía que ya nada mas sabríamos de ellos editan este año su primer cd, "JET SOUNDS", con 12 canciones POP absolutamente contagiosas.

Sus influencias: bandas suecas como the merrymakers, jellyfish, elo, the beach boys, raspberries...resultado final: disco delicioso, para disfrutar de cabo a rabo.

He seleccionado dos temas pero muy bien podrían haber sido otros diferentes.

Classic Swedish power pop in the mold of The Merrymakers and Beagle for fans who have been missing it, The Private Jets have the sunny harmonies and sweet melodies with plenty of guitars and keyboards. The twin brothers Erik Westin and Per Westin have simplistic approach that can’t fail to hit the sweet spot with anyone who has a liking for power pop. Influences are clear here in the opener "I Wanna Be a Private Jet" - the bouncy beat resembles the Rubinoos. The follow up "Extraordinary Sensations" flirts with ELO and The Hudson Brothers, and "Speak Up, Speak Out" mines The Beagle sound perfectly. "Starshaped World" is a dead ringer for a Jellyfish composition (Should Roger Manning Jr. sue?). Some guitar riffs start to resemble Queen or Sweet, and the dual nature of "Fireman for A Day" and "Fire Academy" combines the poppiest side of The Move with Beach Boys chorals. Even "Hayfever" is a basic Beatlesque song that sounds lifted from a Spongetones album. It's hard to find a bad song on the disc, although you could say these songs sound almost too familiar for the die hard fan looking for something new. And after a few listens, some tunes are missing that hook to bring the album into excellent territory. That said it's an very good album and belongs in your collection without a doubt. "Jet Sounds" breaks the sunshine pop barrier.

THE BACKSLIDERS - serves you right

Banda americana con claras influencias "blondienianas".

Este es su segundo disco y "serves you right" la podía haber firmado la mismisima Debbie Harry.

-Rock and Roll and Meandering Nonsense...

Folks who loved the first couple of Blondie albums (before the band turned into a partially digested baloney dump) will likely get a trusty kick out of The Backsliders. Recorded in Spring and Summer of 2007, You’re Welcome features pure, simple, catchy pop music played with integrity and style. The band consists of Chris Bonner, Kim Pendleton, Nolan Theis, and Taylor Young. The sounds on this album were created from a pure love of playing and unbridled enthusiasm. The band writes all of their own material...and almost every song they write sounds like a Top Ten hit. But don’t expect to hear the kind of cheesy breast milk that gets pumped out by American Idol retards. The Backsliders play real pop for real people. Plenty of cool, chunky nuggets here including "You’re Gonna Miss Me," "Typically I Don’t Mind," "Now They Know," and "Someone Has Broken." Really nice sounding pure pop with top-notch vocals. (Rating: 5+)

JEFF BRUCKNER - song to pay for you

Un medio tiempo perfecto, con recuerdos inmediatos a Phil Seymour, Raspberries, Cheap Trick, Dwight Twilley. Se incluye en su disco de debut.

"With the help of Stephen Butler (Smash Palace) on guitar and Anthony Bezich on drums, Jeff Bruckner’s debut is a combination of Raspberries and Cheap Trick-styled power pop sure to please. The opening tracks of "Chicago" and "Not Feelin’ It," are rocking songs with meaty hooks, big enough to catch you quickly and not let you go. The more laid back tone of "Point of View" has a bit of Wilco’s early touch. The Posies-like "Murdering Man" is another standout here with Butler’s great guitar work and the playful lyrics ("Well I shot a man with spray on tan/With a shotgun/No, a rubber band"). Behind it all is Bruckner’s earnest and well thought out stories. THIS IS IVY LEAGUE - don´t waste your love on me

Uno de mis 5 discos favoritos de lo que va de año es el debut de THIS IS IVY LEAGUE. Una colección de brillantes canciones que recuerdan al sixtiepop, Simon y Garfunkel, Belle and Sebastian, Acid Hose Kings, etc y con este remate final que es absolutamente magistral, con un rif de guitarra que se pega a la primera escucha.

Es curioso observar como este año hay dos discos que guardan su mejor canción justo al cierre del cd y además son dos brillantísimas canciones, de las 5 mejores de este año para el POPCHEF. Hablo de "don´t waste your love on me" de THIS IS IVY LEAGUE y "back of my mind" de MATTHEW SWEET, también comentada en este blog.

THE LACKLOVES - summer rain

Que bien sienta la lluvia de verano que mitiga el calor a veces sofocante.

Pues en el último disco de THE LACKLOVES (banda que nació de las cenizas de Blow Pops) hay una canción dedicada precisamente a ella, a the summer rain.

Posiblemente la mejor canción del disco. Todo un hit veraniego...y refrescante.
